Madeira offers a huge variety for the walker, with paths following the Levada irrigation channels right to the most hidden and magnificent spots on the island.
There are three walks, of varying difficulty. Just choose the one best suited to you and your party. The Easy Levada walk takes you through woodland, along a river bank and past tiny villages. The Scenic Levada walk, as its name suggests, provides some breathtaking views as you walk along the sea cliffs then into the wine growing regions. For the more seasoned walker, the Challenging Levada walk rewards your hard work with beautiful vegetation and enchanting waterfalls.
We recommend you wear walking boots if possible, otherwise choose your most comfortable walking shoes with thick soles.
Easy Levada Walk
Through the woodlands above Funchal we stroll along the Levada dos Tornos, which forms the lower section of the water distribution of South East Madeira. Along this walk, one gets a combination of old and new woodland, combined with villages and a country mansion. Halfway along you will pass a Tea House, where you can stop for a cup of tea. The levada walk is approx. 5 km and takes approx. 1.5 hours to walk in a comfortable pace.
Scenic Levada Walk
Levada walk on the Levada do Norte from Quinta Grande to Boa Morte. All year round this is a wonderful walk in a sunny situation on the south coast of the Island, commencing in Quinta Grande above high seacliffs of Cabo Girão.
Here in early Autumn, grapes are harvested for some of Madeira’s best wines. The small farms en route are also dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane and cherries. Although classed as an easy walk there are some narrow paths throughout and we would recommend this for sure-footed walkers with a head for heights. The levada walk is approx. 6 km and takes approx. 2 hours to walk in a comfortable pace.
Challenging Levada Walk
Rabaçal - Risco 25 Fontes. Rabaçal is an enchanting fairyland of singing water falls. Here are the heads of Madeira´s greatest valley.
The mountains are covered in forest of emerald green. Surrounded by this beautiful vegetation the walk starts by the Rabaçal house to Risco, where 2 falls cascade into a pool from a height of 100m. The levada then continues on through the woodlands where it ends up at “25 fontes” (25 springs), a semi circular bowl into which several waterfalls tumble down.
The area is surrounded by ferns and in the afternoon when the sun shines on the sides, the metal in the rocks looks like the walls are glowing. A spectacular view! The same way is taken on the way back. The levada walks is approx. 6 km and takes approx. 2 hours to walk in a comfortable pace.
