Madeira and the neighbouring island of Porto Santo are situated in the Atlantic off the West African coast, just north of the Canaries. Although it is part of the African Plate, some 650 km (400 miles) off coast Africa, it belongs politically and culturally to Europe, some 860 km (535 miles) from the mainland.
Madeira is 36 miles long and 14 miles wide and has a population of approximately 300,000. It is a popular year-round resort, noted for its Madeira wine, flowers, and embroidery artisans, as well as its New Year's Eve celebrations that feature a spectacular fireworks show, which is the largest in the world according to the Guinness World Records.
Reid's Palace will be delighted to help you discover the beautiful island of Madeira. Our helpful hotel staff and concierge will be more than happy to organise trips and excursions during your stay, giving you the opportunity to experience Madeira to the full. |
