Paints:
To get the best results you need the best quality ‘Artists’ paints rather than ‘Students’ quality. In the Winsor & Newton range this means ‘Artists’ Watercolours not ‘Cotman’ Watercolours. I recommend that you bring the 12 ‘Artists’ quality watercolour paints listed below – either half-pans in a paint-box, or tubes with a white mixing palette; a paint-box with half-pans is preferable. I recommend Winsor & Newton, but I have also listed Daler-Rowney wherever there is an equivalent colour which is just as good. For easy use, please arrange your colours through the colour spectrum starting with yellow (as listed below). If you already use a different brand, make sure you have a good choice of bright, transparent colours.
Winsor & Newton Daler Rowney
* Winsor Lemon or Lemon Yellow (D-R)
* Winsor Yellow Deep or Gamboge Hue (D-R)
* Winsor Orange or Cadmium Orange Hue (D-R)
* Winsor Orange (Red Shade) or Warm Orange (D-R)
* Scarlet Lake (must be W & N)
* Permanent Rose or Permanent Rose
* Permanent Carmine (must be W & N)
* Winsor Violet
* French Ultramarine or French Ultramarine
* Sap Green or Sap Green
* Payne’s Gray (must be W & N)
* Burnt Sienna or Burnt Sienna
* A tube of ‘Permanent White’ Gouache
Paper:
* Either: Winsor & Newton ‘Cotman’ Watercolour paper, 140 lb (300 gsm) in sheets (or a large pad at least 16” x 12”) or Canson ‘Montval’ (not Canson ‘Montval Torchon’) Watercolour paper (300gsm).
If you are bringing sheets you will need one whole sheet (or 2 half sheets) per day. A small watercolour pad may also be useful. Both of these papers have a ‘not’ surface (slightly textured) and suit Siriol’s rather wet technique well. Other watercolour papers may not be compatible with this technique but do bring them to try.
* A medium-sized pad of cartridge drawing paper.
* A couple of sheets of Transfer paper and tracing paper may be useful but not essential.
Brushes:
* Sable or sable/synthetic paintbrushes with really good points. Sizes 4, 6 and 8 are most useful but sizes 2 and 10 could also be useful.
I can thoroughly recommend the Kolinsky Sable, Series 33 brushes (short handle) which are reasonably priced and available by mail order from Rosemary & Co, Tel: 01535 600090; Fax: 01535 609009: Email: rosemary@rosemaryandco.com; Website: www.rosemaryandco.com.
* A short flat brush, ⅛” (3mm) width.
Other Materials:
* A roll of brown paper ‘Gumstrip’ tape approx 4 cm wide (from art shop or framer).
* H and HB pencils, eraser and a small retractable craft knife.
* A water-soluble graphite pencil such as Karisma Graphite Aquarelle, medium.
* Kitchen roll or strong tissues and a soft absorbent sponge or ‘J-cloth’.
* Masking fluid (Pebeo ‘Drawing Gum’ is excellent) along with old brushes and/or pens to apply it (a ‘ruling pen’ which has a little screw on the side of the nib works very well). A small bar of soap.
Please Note: Drawing-boards, water-pots and plant material will be supplied.
