Madeira

Madeira and the neighbouring island of Porto Santo are situated in the Atlantic off the West African coast, just north of the Canaries. Madeira is 36 miles long and 14 miles wide and has a population of approximately 300,000.

Porto Santo, 74 kilometres NE of Funchal, is much smaller, only 9 miles long and 3 miles wide. The main attraction is an 8-kilometre long white sand beach, in contrast to Madeira's breathtaking volcanic rock shoreline.

Madeira is the ideal place to relax and pamper your mind and body in splendid surroundings.


	Events Calendar February 2008 Madeira Carnival - Extravagant and lively carnivals are held on Shrove Tuesday with decorative floats, costumes and dancing lighting up the streets of Funchal. March 2008 Madeira Island Open - As part of the PGA European Tour, the Madeira Island Open challenges the world's top golfers on its sublime wooded and mountainous course. 01-30 June 2008 The Atlantic Festival - Classical music performances are held at important sites in the region, such as St Lawrence’s Palace, Teatro Municipal Balthazar Dias, Casa das Mudas, and several churches in Funchal. August 2008 Madeira Wine Rally - The largest automobile event in the area, held annually. Two days of car rally, racing round various parts of the island.
